Baby Mia

Thursday afternoon we received some very alarming news. At a visit to the cardiologist we were informed that our unborn baby girl (Mia) has a severe congenital heart defect. We were devastated. We spent the weekend away with phones shut off and time to cry till there was just no more liquid in our bodies. We are so in love with this little baby and we are prepared to do all that is necessary to help heal her heart. Her heart disease is called Critical Aortic Stenosis. The abnormally tiny opening in her aortic valve has severely affected her mitral valve resulting in a very dilated and dysfunctional left ventricle. We are still in need of much information at this point, but it looks like there is no alternative but for Mia to have a heart transplant upon birth. She will not be able to sustain her own life and will need to be in an ICU until a donor heart becomes available. We have received a huge outpouring of love and support from family, friends and from the whisperings of the Holy Ghost. It still feels like I just stepped off the stage from an Oprah episode, but I think that we have come to grips and are preparing for a miracle. We know that the Lord has prepared a way for this to work out. We are preparing for the best, and look forward to witnessing miracles in the near future.

We decided we should start calling her by her name and have always liked the name Mia. Jensen was going to be Mia, but he came out with a certain type of plumbing that didn’t match the name. Ellie was just the right name for Ellie, and now we are ready to meet baby Mia. This little one is very active and wants us to know she is here and ready to fight.

If this baby is anything like her mom, she is not going to give up easily. We look forward to having her in our family and in our home. All prayers have been felt, and are greatly appreciated.

You know that we love you all. Our thoughts are especially with our little neice Mia. There is a special little lady that has been waiting for a while to gain a body and come to your family. We are here for you if you need anyone to watch Jensen and Ellie, bring dinners, bring desserts, or just visit with you guys.

I find myself with quiet moments in the temple when I am between assignments. These are times when I ponder "whys" and "why nots". Saturday after putting Mia's name on the prayer role was such a moment. I was reminded that she has a Heavenly Father watching over her as well as generations of ancestral angels. My fears, my tears are a part of my mortality. My hope and peace are part of my eternal nature. Both are acceptable before the Lord. I was reminded of that again with both of your testimonies.

Hi Mimi. This is Jill (Edwards) Stevenson. I'm a blog stalker and very rarely post unless it is someone that I'm sure will know and remember me, but wanted to post and let you know that I will be thinking and praying for your family, especially your little Mia. I know that the Lord only puts in front of us the things we are able to bear. I know that you will find the strength that is needed. I wish you well and will keep you in my prayers.

The longer I'm on this earth the more I recognize the ways the Lord conditions us for our trials. Usually we don't realize the strength we've been blessed with until we're through the thick of it. It seems you're in the thick of it, but I've always known you to have an amazing spirit and amazing ability to find the positvie in all situations. Our prayers are with you and your family especially little Mia.

Mimi and family,
My heart goes out to you guys and you can be sure we will be praying for you and baby Mia.

I am not sure Mimi if you ever saw the posts I wrote about our friends the scadlocks. Their baby was born with a severe heart defect not found until hours after he was born. Long long story short, 16 days after he was born he recieved a heart transplant and is now 8 months old. Anyway, the mom, Kim, would love it I'm sure if you contacted her. She is going through this right now and would be a great aid to you guys. Here is her blog and let me know if you need her email.

Mimi: Icried when I read this. You and your family are so awesome to look at this the way you are. I know the power of prayers work, and you can bet I will be adding you to my "list" Hang in there, and just look at it this way: She must be being sent to you for a reason, seeing that you have been through all of this yourself, you can be her rock! Your in my thoughts...

I received your blog address from Erica Grover and I would love to get in contact with you. My son was born in August and he was diagnosed with Mitral Valve/Tricuspid Valve Stenosis. He received a heart transplant when he was 16 days old. It has been a hard road, but it has been the most incredible experience of our lives. Our little guys is a miracle and I would not change what we have gone through. Truthfully I feel like our little baby (Beckham) is a normal baby.

Also, my husbands cousin had a baby a month before Beckham and he was born with Aortic Stenosis and he received a transplant when he was a month old. His blog is noahsadventure.com

Please feel free to contact me. I would love to talk. I know what you are going through and the heartache that you are feeling. I also know how special your little Mia is. I don't know why my little guy had to suffer but I am so grateful to be his mommy!

One great thing to know is that Seattle has one of the best infant/pediatric transplant programs in the USA! We are looking at Seattle for a place for my husbands masters programs because of their transplant program.

Kim Scadlock sent me a link to your blog as my son, Noah, was born with Critical Aortic Stenosis and an abnormal Mitral Valve with Significant Regurgitation. He received his transplant before he was even one month old on 07.07.07. I know what you must be going through right now as I have been there myself not too long ago. Please feel free to contact me. You can find me email on my blogger profile page. It's a rocky road but one that leads to a beautiful place.

I also am a member of a support group for Heart Transplant recipients and their care givers that is based out of Washington. I don't know where you live, but I saw in Kim's comment that she mentioned that area. I could give you the information of several people in that area that you would find very helpful.

Our prayers are with you. Please remember you are not alone. The Lord works MIGHTY miracles and He will carry you through this just as he will Mia.

You can read about Noahs story at www.NoahsAdventure.com

Much Love and Prayers,
Crystal Martin

Yours is a touching story.

Considering I was born with a congenital bicuspid aortic valve, I can relate.

34 years after birth, I had double heart valve replacement due to my aortic stenosis valve disease.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Mimi - I didn't have time to read the comments but I talked to Kim and she said she had contacted you. I hope it wasn't weird that I gave you her info, I just read your post about little Mia and immediately felt like you needed to contact them....if nothing but support.

Your family and Mia are all on the Winter Quarters prayer roll...:)

I've decided that the Lord sends us children He knows we need and who need us. How it all works out is up to our hard work and prayers. You're in our prayers and so is little Mia. By the way, Mia's name means "mine" in Italian, but the connotation is not really possession but great affection. She belongs in your family.
