The REAL baby announcement

Today was a wonderful day. We began the day by waking up from a decent nights sleep. This was great, since our usual tradition is to horse around until late the night before and then go into labor missing any sleep at all! So, we woke up at 6 a.m. to call down to the birthing center at Tacoma General Hospital (I was born there too). They had a 7:30 opening so we got ready to head for the door to be induced. Mimi was pumped to have made it to the first since everyone in our family but one has a holiday birthday, and Mimi really wanted an April baby. (We got lucky because she had very consistent contractions the night before for about 7 hours). One of the coolest parts of the day is that Mimi and her sister were both in labor at the same time! Both with their fourth child. Jessica had a baby girl who was born about 5 hours before our baby.

Our awesome pal Morgan dropped by to stay with our 3 children and off we went. We were a little sad to leave since Jensen had lost his first tooth and we were anxious to see his reaction the the Silver Dollar the the tooth fairy left. Doing some math on our way to the hospital the tooth fairy became worried that there wouldn't be enough of these for all the teeth in Jensen's mouth multiplied by four.

Back to the story at hand. Mimi was dilated at a 3 and having consistent contractions when we arrived. A few hours later she was given Pitosin to get the contractions moving a little faster. She was feeling some pretty serious labor pains around 1:30 and received her epidural. All previous epidurals had left her legs completely numb, so Mimi was really really excited when she found that the pain was gone, but had feeling in her legs. They finally broke her water when Mimi was dilated to an eight. It took an hour from that point and baby was born at 5:04 p.m. weighing in at 7 lbs even. He is 19 inches long and has a lot of black hair. Everything went so well today. Here are the reasons:

1. Our good friend Analisa came and took pictures. This was so great for several reasons. Firstly, I could fully enjoy the experience hands free, and we got almost 600 pictures, all of which are better quality than my skillslessness would have produced.
2. A rock star epidural that removed pain, but kept feeling in legs.
3. Mimi actually got to push. Never have the doctors let Mimi push other than "give a little push" as they pull baby out with forceps. It felt so normal! Of course it was only for like 3 contractions, but still... 3. I already said number three, this is number four, come on now, pay attention.
4. Baby Peed all over the place as they were putting him on Mimi right after birth- he's already a jokester.
5. Healthy boy.
6. Chatting with the kids on skype.
7. Baby latched on to try and feed on the first attempt, just 50 minutes into his life.
8. Most importantly I could feel and see emotional wounds healing. Mimi and I were really emotional as we were able to do things that we felt robbed of with Mia. It is difficult to convey this in writing, but it was so tender and sweet to watch as they gave Mimi her baby and let her keep him and hold him. This is a powerful thing for any mom, but take it away and then when you get to experience that again- it was touching. Mimi ached to nurse Mia and now she can nurse our new little one. In all we are so grateful to be able to finish this day with such a good experience. It seems to be melting away much of the previous pain and heartache. Today has been a day of healing and joy.

Here are some pictures of our day. Name still to come.

He looks like a George.

But my son says he looks like a Brady.

Fair enough!

Congratulations! I love that you included the emotions of being able to have a "normal" delivery. I cried and cried about how "not fair" it was that my babies went straight to the NICU and I just had my husband to stare at...so YAY for you!!!
